With magical power he changes a girl into a lunar paralytic, or brings an adolescent blush to the broken old man begging in the wineshop, or the odor of a nocturnal port to a woman's hair, and he works continuously on the arms with expressions that give birth to the dances of every age. But he can never repeat himself. This is interesting to emphasize. The duende does not repeat himself, any more than do the forms of the sea during a squall."

Coming from tribal bellydance, where nowadays EVERY weekend there is something happenng bellydance related! It's great but having been spoiled by that, and now being excited about flamenco, it seems the only place to see flamenco is in a restaurant (with a cover charge usually around $40!) or in a theatre (again, amazingly high prices!).

It's great to see that flamenco is respected as a serious art form, whereas bellydance is trying to with Bellydance Superstars, DVD's, etc. It would be great to have something akin to a "hafla" to go to. Can anybody enlighten me? Thanks!

Dance-A-Thon!

This Saturday, ShoeBox Studios is hosting a Dance-A-Thon benefit for the studio & CARE.org.

Here's the deal:
Kick off the new year by dancing, sweating, and shaking it for a great cause! ShoeBox Studio is hosting it's first ever Dance-A-Thon! On January 12th, from 10AM-8PM, every ShoeBox class will be offered in a 30-45 minute sample format. Classes will run back to back as a "marathon".

Dancers who would like to dance but not collect pledges may still participate by simply making a $12-20 sliding scale donation at the door.

You can view a class schedule for the day and download a pledge sheet here: http://www.shoeboxsf.com/events.html

******

This is an awesome opportunity to try out every class the studio offers, and do it all for free, with the help of your pledges!

CARE.org will be donating their signature "I Am Powerful" t-shirt to the person who dances the longest! Also, for every hour you dance, there is a donor who will give $5 to CARE.org, helping us raise funds for CARE! Register your time spent dancing here: http://www.care.org/features/workout/index.asp?source=170760680000

CARE is a leading humanitarian organization fighting global poverty. Women are at the heart of CARE's community-based efforts to improve basic education, prevent the spread of HIV, increase access to clean water and sanitation, expand economic opportunity and protect natural resources. CARE also delivers emergency aid to survivors of war and natural disasters, and helps people rebuild their lives. Donation will be made in the name of ShoeBox Studio Student Community.

******

If you'd like to come, but your nervous about your stamina - you DO NOT have to dance the whole time nonstop! You can pick and choose what classes you'd like to take, as we will be logging your time throughtout the whole day.

The top 3 Dance-A-Thoner's will be mentioned on the ShoeBox Site, Blog, and in our February newsletter.
However, my company director says I don't do jaleo (yelling "ole" and such) and that's a problem. The reason I don't do it is because I feel, well...kinda stupid doing it. I feel silly saying anything other than "ole" because I don't speak Spanish all that well and it just feels fake. Nothing else about flamenco feels fake for me--I totally get everything else, but this jaleo business has me flustered. How can I get over feeling like it's silly and fake when I do it?

Many of you responded to my demand and we made happy a lot of rroma childer and families from the Balkans. Thank you for that !
In a few weeks, i am going to India, where I will be meeting nomad kalbeliya families. This time our Organization would need clothes for children, especially very small children. So please, if you have anything to give, we would be happy to take it to India. I will be in Paris until January 9th, so for those who live in Paris, somebody from the Organization would come to pick up the staff. And for the others, there is a possibility to send it. For those who are already in India, I will be performing in New Delhi (January 10th and 11th) and Orissa (January 12th) before going to Rajasthan (Jan. 14th), so if you wish to help, please contact me as soon as possible so that we can arrange a meeting.

Hello, everyone. This is my first post to this tribe, and I only began flamenco lessons in September. I have a great teacher (Melinda Marquez, in New Haven though she also teaches in NYC), and I love the way she's introducing the material. My issue is this: I've noticed that when I attend class twice in one week, the second time I'm *much* better at the drills and practice than I am when a week passes by without dancing. Unfortunately, I usually can only go once a week. I'd love to practice at home as well, but being such a newbie at this, I have a few questions:

1. How do you structure a home practice?

2. What music is best for practice? Are there any drills DVDs?

3. What kinds of floors can be safely practiced on? (I don't want to ruin my knees!)

4. Are there any dangers or concerns about home practice? (I.e., could I pick up bad habits if I don't have someone there to correct me?)

I'd be glad to hear any advice/comments/suggestions.

I live about 250 miles from the nearest professional dancers, so this was my only option except when I'd go to workshops or go on trips to see a teacher.

I decided that perhaps this would work for Flamenco, too, until I could get to see a teacher for some instruction. I bought the first two DVD's from the Manuel Salado series. While it's easy to see what the dancer is doing, I'm very frustrated. There is no discussion about the rhythms, how to incorporate steps into the dance. I guess it's a lack of context.

So is there some way I can fill in the gaps? The DVDs I have covers steps from Bulerias, tarantos, fandangos, sevillanas and boleras. However, other than learning a couple steps, I really don't feel like I have any idea what each of them is, how they're different, etc.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Hi all

Possibly a contraversial topic, but it's good to stimulate interesting discussion huh ;)

Was curious as to general opinion on whether there should be some kind of teaching 'qualification' for Flamenco (much like RAD for ballet).

I know that you cannot easily compare the two discplines as the ethos behind each are so different, and I'm not suggesting we all should conform to a 'syllabus' of material, but just as an easy example.

I've heard reports from dancers on various North American workshops, that even in 'advanced' level classes the technique (amongst fellow students) leaves much to be desired (eg poor/incorrect footwork). Not so much of a problem until you find out that some of these people are also promoting themselves as teachers/professionals.

In my very humble opinion, I think it is impossible to teach Flamenco effectively unless you have had experience of studying in Spain with decent teachers. Even to consider yourself a serious professional Flamenco dancer without ever having studied in Spain is pushing it quite a bit. There have also been tales told of sharing workshops in Spain with people that puport to be professional teachers/dancers who then find themselves so wholly unprepared for the level of technique expected of them that they are mortified/embarassed to be there.

I feel that we are very far removed from the 'source' of Flamenco therefore it is very easy for it to get dilluted and peddled as a 'lite' version of the real art form. Anyone that thinks Flamenco is 'easier' than ballet/modern/jazz etc ad infinitum have not experienced 'real Flamenco' ;)

I'm not talking traditional Flamenco versus modern/contemporary/nuevo Flamenco here, nor am I saying that it is not possible for someone from North America (or indeed anywhere other than Spain) to achieve the same level of brilliance as someone born and raised in Jerez.

It does concern me however, that some people could be making money from selling an inaccurate version of what the majority of the public assume to be 'authentic Flamenco'.

A 6 week course in Sevillanas does not a professional make. Also anyone selling a beginners course in 'Rhumba Flamenco' should be given a very wide berth indeed ;)

Anyone have any thoughts? Would be interested to hear your views.

Performances particularly worth note - Farruca by Joaquin Cortes, Solea by Farruco, a twelve year old Farruquito (Grandfather and Grandson dancing together!), Chocolate (singing) and other members of Familia Farruco (general accompaniment/palmas). Also, Petenera by Maria Pages and Jose Menese and I love the Alegrias by Matilde Coral and her company of dancers - they are all so elegant with such stunning posture.

My partner supports me financially and logistically (lifts home from late night classes etc), but has no interest in dance whatsoever. He's not particularly proud of my achievements, because he doesn't 'get it' and most likely never will.
I have my 'dance' friends, whom I go to see performances with and attend classes together, and I have my other friends, who have nothing to do with it.

Not sure about other classes yet, but there's lots of exciting stuff to choose from - Guarjira, advanced Tangos, advanced Bulerias etc. If only I were competent enough to take the higher level classes. I'm absolutely dying to attempt a more advanced Bulerias (it's one of my favorite palos).

Has anyone else experenced this?

Sometimes when I am dancing in the studio I feel that the mirror can be very distracting and actually restrict my progress/expression. I think it is kind of easy to get to caught up in performing the correct technique rather than relaxing, dancing and feeling the music. I find it difficult to trust in my ability and just 'go with it'.

When we rehearsed for our student show last year we had to practise with our backs to the mirror and I found it very liberating. I could concentrate more on the music, the atmosphere around me and the feel of the movements rather than scrutinising myself for mistakes in my reflection.

I just wondered if this was a common thing other students/dancers shared (or am I just weird)?

Que triste! :-(
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Maclovia Ruiz, the San Francisco girl who overcame humble beginnings and prejudice to become the first ethnic dancer in a major American ballet company and who ultimately snagged the lead role in Carmen at New York's Metropolitan Opera House, has died. She was 95.

Ms. Ruiz died New Year's Eve after a brief illness.

Born in 1910 in Guadalajara, Mexico, Ms. Ruiz, the eldest of three sisters, moved to San Francisco as a child and was taught folk dancing by her father. Immediately taking a liking to it, the young Ms. Ruiz performed in neighborhood clubs, but she was repeatedly turned away from local dance schools because of her skin color.

At age 10, she was accepted at the Peters Wright Dance School in the city, where she studied interpretive dance, and she spent the next seven years studying under Lenore Peters Wright. Ms. Ruiz became part of the vaudeville circuit at age 15, which provided her with an outlet for her natural flair for drama.

At age 23, she auditioned for Adolph Bolm and became the first woman of color to gain entry into the San Francisco Ballet. She went on to star in ballets throughout the world, including the Metropolitan Opera Company and the American Ballet Company, where under the famed George Balanchine, she would star in the 1936 production of "Carmen." She also performed in Samuel Goldwyn's musical extravaganza, "The Goldwyn Follies."

Throughout her years, Ms. Ruiz danced in operas and nightclubs, and she mastered the art of Spanish dance, including flamenco, which she performed throughout Central and South America. She also occasionally performed with her sister Carmen Ruiz.

In the 1940s, she joined the USO and performed with notables such as Jose Greco and Pilar Lopez at the Hollywood Bowl. Her later career, in the 1940s and 1950s, focused on flamenco dance, and her abilities would take her as far away as Spain.

Her wide-ranging career teamed her up with everyone from Jeanette MacDonald to Nelson Eddy. And she had the reviews to prove her star power.

In 1938, the New York Sun called her a "well-trained and vivid dancer."

In 1943, one San Francisco Examiner critic called her "the greatest Flamenco dancer of today," while another said it was "impossible to find a more brilliant and magnetic last act solo dancer than Maclovia Ruiz."

In 1948, she met her future husband, photographer John Mailer, during a performance in Montreal. She married the young Canadian, and they briefly moved to Hawaii, but the couple decided to return to San Francisco. The two would have one son but divorced in 1953 after five years of marriage.

Ms. Ruiz never remarried, but she continued to dance, even long after her professional career ended.

Ms. Ruiz taught ballroom dancing and coached up-and-coming Spanish and Flamenco dancers, continuing to dance well into her 70s.

She also taught movement to disabled people at the Potrero Hill Neighborhood Center until the late 1990s. And when some of the seniors there seemed a little disdainful of their disabled counterparts, Ms. Ruiz again broke the barriers of prejudice, teaching them kindness and tolerance.

"She was incredible with our clients," said Lori Jean Robinson-Hatten, a former director of the Potrero Hill center. "What was so beautiful about her was she brought a better understanding of people. She was loved by everybody."

In 1997, Ms. Ruiz also won a certificate of honor from the San Francisco Board of Supervisors for "public recognition of outstanding service to the City and County of San Francisco."

Robinson-Hatten, herself a dancer who met Ms. Ruiz in 1984, said Ms. Ruiz brushed off her fame, and even her struggle to overcome racism, saying it was "another lifetime ago."

"She would push it aside ... in a humble way," said Robinson-Hatten.

Sara de Luis, who studied Spanish dance with Ms. Ruiz as a teenager, called her breathtaking on stage. Later, de Luis choreographed a special routine devoted to Spanish dancers of the golden age, and she considered Ms. Ruiz among them.

"She was an incredible presence on the stage," said de Luis, who lives in Seattle but has traveled worldwide as a Spanish dancer. "She was a very theatrical person, and that's who she was. Not all Spanish dancers have that.

"She was one of the greats."

I am much more drawn to the power and grace of Latin dancing, and have a few things I like fire dancing to, but would love suggestions from you men and women. I would be looking for music that is fairly passionate and charged, the kind you can't help but dance to, the kind that makes you feel alive, powerful and sexy. Instrumental is best, and faster rather than slower, because in fire dancing, you really never stand still--or else you will light yourself on fire! I am excited about this--if there are people spinning fire out there to world music, I haven't seen them. Thank you, all.

I'm not sure of the price now, but it was $15 per class pre-Katrina and is probably still the same.
Also, I have unlimited (for now) practice space at a studio on Oak Street and will be setting a day for ANYONE who dances flamenco to come and practice with me and my friend. If anyone is interested in getting together and just dancing or teaching each other choreography or whatever, please message me through tribe and I will get back to you and let you know when we will be meeting. IF YOU ARE A GUITARIST and you want to play for dance practice, please please please message me through tribe. We can't let the flamenco scene in New Orleans die! Come and join us!

I found it hard to believe it was really a beginning class, as there were several dancers w/lots of experience, AND the teacher had us all doing combinations from the get-go. I was completely lost, and never went back.

I would really like to find a teacher who really can deal with TOTAL beginners. Other than being a pretty good club dancer and former go-go girl, I've got no formal dance training, so my experience w/choreography is zilch, nada, zero.

I had a friend tell me that I'd be better off starting w/salsa, as apparently it's 100X easier to learn than flamenco, but really, my heart is with flamenco.

My guitar teacher and a few of his friends will be coming down, a new Tribe friend or two, etc.

The groups music can be sampled on amazon.com, concert info can be found here:
I'm the kind of person who goes early to get prime blanket space, so that's covered (no pun intended!). A wine/cheese potluck thing would be great. Please post here or private message me - gracias!

A space in which to approach flamenco dancing, for professionals and visitors alike, in an eighteenth-century building inspired by central European Romanticism and found in the very centre of Seville. This is how the Museum of Flamenco Dancing will be: its contruction began a year ago and it has a four-million Euro budget.

The three-storey building, which is between two characteristic monuments in Seville, the Cathedral and the Reales Alcazares, will be the site for a Dance School with rooms for teaching, demonstrations and rehearsals, and areas for exhibitions. These two areas will be completed by a Learning Zone, basically aimed at people who don't know much about this art form, a souvenir shop, and a courtyard that will be used for performances, touring exhibitions, and for other purposes.

The project was born little over two years ago, put forward by the director of the Ballet Flamenco de Andalucía (Andalusian Flamenco Ballet), Cristina Hoyos, which means that it is supported by the national and international artistic reputation that the bailaora (female flamenco dancer) enjoys. The first contribution towards the museum comes from the possessions of Cristina Hoyos herself, including her artistic wardrobe, equipment, pictures, other artistic pieces, etc.

The museum will offer activities such as temporary exhibitions, reports and divulgative talks, theme days, conferences, artistic presentations and didactic animation activities aimed at a school-aged audience.
